Mike and Erin, both lowly grad students at the time, met online in October 2013 using the scientific matchmaking technology known as OkCupid. After bonding over grad school, a shared love of Will Ferrell, and spicy food, Erin and Mike went on their first date on October 5th at a Mongolian Hot Pot restaurant in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. Mike proved himself to be worthy husband material by planning adorable dates for Erin every week, from Halloween trips to Salem to picnics on a nearby island. Erin proved herself to be worthy wife material when Mike took her skiing for the first time in New Hampshire. Erin tried to show off by rocketing down a slightly more difficult slope, only to fall on her face halfway down, but she walked it off with a smile.
Mike proposed to Erin on December 23rd, 2014, on their trip to San Diego to spend Christmas with the Fletchers. After several months of elaborate lies and secret trips to the jewelers, Mike surprised Erin with a photobook entitled “Green Pasta and Wine” by Dr. Streus written to mimic “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. It ended in the words “Would you, could you, with a ring?” Erin said she would, she could, and happily accepted!
Mike and Erin surprised the Fletchers the next day with custom-printed T-shirts with “Best Mother-in-Law” and “Best Father-in-Law” written on them, and a special “Grandma in Law” trucker hat for Erin’s Grandma Mary. Upon hearing about the engagement, Mike’s mom and grandmother were pleasantly surprised that Mike remembered to buy a ring.
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other-
Mike says he loves how secure I make him feel and that he never feels anxious or worried about our relationship in any way. My favorite thing about him is how patient he is. I get very worked up and impatient and he always helps calm me down and balances me out.
Share with us something silly or quirky the other person does-
Mike says the funniest thing that I do is that, when I'm upset with him, I act even nicer than I normally do, out of spite. Mike's biggest quirk is that, when he puts leftovers away in the fridge, they must be in a properly sized tupperware. If there is a better tupperware than the one the food is currently in, he will move it, and proudly show me how well he fit the food into the new container. He gets this from his mom.
Besides getting married, what's the one thing you are looking forward to on your wedding day?
We are absolutely thrilled to have both of our families and all of our closest friends all in one place for a day. We know this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all of the people who mean the most to us, and we feel so fortunate to be able to celebrate with them.
